Major budget constraints and I’m out of insurance anyways so no rush. But I did have some major break throughs. I got the slip yoke for the 231 I needed.
Ok this gets complicated. Tcase 1 is the one I tore apart and is the original case to this jeep, tcase 2 is one I gathered up for free and it’s the old one I paid kelowna transmission to rebuild way back from my first wj before the tj-6. T tcase 3 is a low mileage one that just blew up and is still in this rig.
Tcase 1 has a stripped shift gear, tcase 2 I tore apart because I’m getting good at it and the gear is barely worn and the planetary has wear. So I took the planetary from case 1 and put it into case 2 as it doesn’t look worn at all compared to case 2. It’s not perfect but it looks like it should work, I suspect it used to be a new gear on the rebuild as I made them take the case apart 3 times as it always kicked out of gear and was never fixed. Anyways it has a tiny bit of wear but I’m hoping for the cost of an output seal it’ll run for a while. When I swap it out I’ll set the 231 up and measure what I need for a driveshaft so I can try and find a cheap solution for the swap and hopefully acquire the parts before the 242 goes again.

Interesting. It seems to solve that mystery.
I guess the 242 just isn't up to the task in that department. I wonder if the HD version is any better in that regard?

It’s something in the design of the awd mode. I keep calling it a planatary but it’s actually the differential side having the issues. It’s in the awd/lockup for the front diff. It sits inside the chain drive set and seems to be a common unique problem to the wj setup. The Hummer h2 has the beefiest set up 242. The v8 guys are having the same issue though with the wj 242HD

Got the patchwork tcase back together and waiting for the output seal and decided to tear the awd planetary apart to get a closer look at the problem area. I’m wondering if Steve is right and it’s related to the springs in the shift rail and allowing for movement which wears the gears. I’d almost like to try solid mounting the shift rail if I was going to mess with another but probably need a lathe and skill to get it right on. The first pic is inside the planatary, second is with the gear that is worn that slides inside it, third is the shift rail. Both the planetary and gear are worn I think

The cable is but the detents that’s holds it in are all inside and go on the shift fork side with the sensor for the full time/part time lights

I am right now replacing a np231 due to improperly adjusted shift linkage wadded up the tcase. customer could shift the t-case into low but due to the bodylift the actual shifter wouldnt actually lock in the lowrange shift gate position. bumping the shifter with your knee would cause it to pop out even under load. makes me wonder if your situation is opposite shifter is locking in the proper range, but the shifter on the tcase isnt perhaps were it should be. have a ford case here that chewed the ends of the shift fork right off because of that. in 2wd position it was so close to shifting into 4hi that the side loading of the shift collar destroyed the forkScoobienorth wrote: ↑Sat May 02, 2020 11:55 amThe cable is but the detents that’s holds it in are all inside and go on the shift fork side with the sensor for the full time/part time lights

Yeah, the XJ ones will do something like that when the bushings in the linkage and the motor/trans mounts get all wallowed out.

Brian was over today giving me a hand for a minute and had a look at it as well. The gear is getting sucked to far into planetary. It looks like once the fears get worn the spring for pull in it out of 4wd it’s letting it move and pull the gear to far.

This went about true to form with my abilities. My drivers seat back was breaking on one side and getting worse. My parts jeep I got last year had power leather seats so I grabbed them. I don’t have the wiring for them and the passenger side one didn’t slide and was stuck right where you can’t get the back bolts in to bolt it down. So today I had enough moving the seats around trying to clean up the shop and swapped the bases. Really easy, 4 bolts for each seat track set and the tracks just swapped. Mind it took every combination of 13mm I had to get the bolts out with all the power stuff in the way. Dumped about 20 pounds per seat off to. I built a jumper wire and recounted the drivers seat a tiny bit before disconnecting and cutting what I couldn’t remove for wires then tested the seat in the jeep and it’s now stuck partially towards gangster lean. It’s not terrible and better than the broken seat but apparently the floor in the jeep isn’t as level as it looks to my uncalibrated eye. Anyways one more task done.

Broken seats are the worst. Makes ur ride feel like crap even tho its just a seat lol

Nothing picture worthy but started on the tcase swap. Should have been an hour job maybe two. But didn’t turn out that way. My front drive shaft diff ujoint was completely dusted out. Can’t believe it held a locker and 37’s that bad and my slip spline was seized up. So I got it all working again. The gear nipple got busted off on the front header piece as it clearance itself. Apparently my front driveshaft has hit a few things but seems straight. Anyways 2 Trips to the parts store to get the right seal for the back of the transmission to fix one oil leak. Then I found out my yoke for the front of the transfer case didn’t have a machined .25” or so off the splines which let the tcase front drive output would move in and out about ,25” so I dug out my carbide bit and my drill as it’s all I had and hand machined it in so it’s tight. Wonder if that bit of movement was enough to lean on the awd shift collar on the other side Of the chain or if it was just hard on the chain. Anyways it’s in and tight. Kinda hacked but I didn’t take pics so it is just hearsay anyways

Tore the old case down and the shift collar isn’t that bad if shape but seems to have some play on the shaft it sits on. Going to get another set of eyes and possibly see if I can piece together one more tcase
