Flipping a d300
I’m still in the idea stage here, I know the next tcase in my wheeler wj is on borrowed time even if it works, I’ve got the chance to grab a d300 and the 2 low option is really appealing to me for running up into the mountains Without my front end locking in every corner. Is flipping it a good idea and worth the cost? Any issues to be aware of? Should I just run my 231 and be done with it?

If the shift rails are at all pitted or scored it will pour oil out of them, since the seals were never meant to handle immersion. I *think* JB Custom Fab still sells stainless rails for them, and I would say that's a minimum requirement unless you don't care about adding oil regularly and the mess it will make. Along with obviously new seals for said rails. I believe people also have played with tighter springs on the seals, seal runners, and various other things to keep them from leaking.
Overall I feel the D300 scores poorly in regards to cost versus benefit. Stock it is not that strong, and once you throw upgrade outputs on it, flip it, add shifts/rails, rebuild it (chances are it's hashed inside and will need every bearing, also a chance the gears are mangled, worn, pitted, etc), you're into it for a lot more money than a couple hundred bucks. A tricked out D300 typically winds up being almost the price of an Atlas, with less strength, less options, and horrible resale value.
You can regrind/profile the shift cam on a 231/241 (likely other NP/NV cases too as they mostly work on the same shift cam/fork design) to allow for a 2 low position, obviously rear wheels only, and it used to be an almost popular mod.

I've never heard about it until now but it seems like it would be pretty stright forward to modify the cam so that the fork for the front output goes back into the disengaged spot before after neutral before going back into the engaged spot for 4LHillBilt wrote: ↑Mon Jul 27, 2020 9:40 pmAny more info on this?
