If I remember correctly, the only big advantage to the 10.5 was something to do with the pinion splines for the pinion yoke being longer. The early (pre 93 ish?) 10.25s have a really short section of splines that would not hold up for long if you have a heavy right foot.

The little bro had a 10.25 catastrophically fail behind his 7.3 for no apparent reason and we had to find a 93+ axle.
