Re: Axles for a softcore build
I think they're garbage but know almost nothing about them. Pretty certain they're the same width as the 1 tons, so 69"+ (I think the Dodge 1 ton axles from that era are actually 70.5" off the top of my head) and low pinion. Pretty certain they run the same crappy CAD (central axle disconnect) setup as the 1 ton stuff. Not sure if they use the common BJ spacing of the 1 ton stuff either, because if they did at least you could put Ford outers on for selectable hubs. But like I said, I don't know anything about them really. I'll have to look into it later tonight.pointsnorth wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2020 3:55 pm What about 94-00ish dodge half ton diffs

Re: Axles for a softcore build
Trail mart makes their fabricated housing in pretty much any width you want up to 75

Re: Axles for a softcore build
I should rephrase that the housing is 75 wide you cut it to length and weld on the knuckles then order your inner shafts

https://www.danaaftermarket.com/spicer- ... xle%C2%AE-
spicer says their crate front D44 axle is 430lbs at 63.8" WMS complete w/brakes <--that sounds super heavy to me thicker tube than stock stuff maybe?
https://www.danaaftermarket.com/ud60-au ... angler-jk-
the "ultimate D60" complete with JK brackets claims to be 530lbs at 69" WMS complete
so wild ass guess would be that running the smaller tube of the 44 and the smaller center chunk should save you ~70lbs or so? 50lbs? i'm not sure what the difference between the outsides would be, but the complete thing seems to net 100 lbs
when i weighed mine with steering but without brakes it was 294 lbs. FJ60 axle, i'd imagine the FJ80 would be about the same, and if you use the stock hubs would give you the ~63" WMS with a much better scrub radiuuiui than i've got

Re: Axles for a softcore build
The Dana/Spicer crate JK D44 has thicker (maybe larger too) tubes and more beef on the center section. It was pretty much a direct answer to all the failings of the FCA spec'd axle they built. Still seems fairly heavy at that, but I haven't weighed a D44 before.Provience wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2020 4:08 pm https://www.danaaftermarket.com/spicer- ... xle%C2%AE-

530lbs sounds totally reasonable for a D60... Sorta. The 04 not-so-Superduty one I have is 540lbs dressed. I'm not sure how Spicer got the JK version to be so heavy. I guess it's pretty similar really, but maybe a bit less meat on the brakes and a bit more meat in brackets.
The FJ80 axle would probably be 370lbs at least based on that, adding brakes and brackets. Rotors and calipers aren't exactly light, assuming they're actually large enough to be effective.

Re: Axles for a softcore build
What sort of tube/shell thickness is the FJ or minitruck axles? I recall they're pretty light.

Re: Axles for a softcore build
Looked around and nothing too concrete. Sucks trying to get info from all the VS owned forums because the ads literally attack you. Anyways, it appears the D60 is a direct swap for the D44 in those trucks, and it appears nobody mentioned any sort of width change. They are also low pinion. So not much point there.Scott Cee AKA 2drx4 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2020 4:03 pmI think they're garbage but know almost nothing about them. it's light. 1/8? let met go look.Scott Cee AKA 2drx4 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2020 4:25 pm What sort of tube/shell thickness is the FJ or minitruck axles? I recall they're pretty light.
according to "the internet" they are 3/16" which sounds about right.
but this is also something that doesn't need to be 3/8" wall or anything crazy

I don't understand how it ever holds up being so thin.Provience wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2020 4:54 pmit's light. 1/8? let met go look.Scott Cee AKA 2drx4 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2020 4:25 pm What sort of tube/shell thickness is the FJ or minitruck axles? I recall they're pretty light.

JK guys regularly dent their 1/4" thick tubes.
I guess that's why everyone offers aftermarket Toyota housings.

Re: Axles for a softcore build
5200lb trail weight isn't really out of the realm of some Toyotas.pointsnorth wrote: ↑Sat Mar 28, 2020 5:49 pmcause their frickin heavy pigs then they bolt all the garbage on there for mall crawlin
But yeah, a JKU isn't light, 4200 empty I think. I can't imagine a FJ80 is much, if any, lighter. Especially not if you have the optional fridge center console.

Re: Axles for a softcore build
landcruisers can easily tip the scales at over 5000 pounds easy especially if its diesel then its probably closer to 6000 lol. cruiser diff housing are significantly beefier than the rest of the toyota offerings. even the first gen tundra 8.4 is pretty light weight in comparison
