Hawse fairlead on steel line
My synthetic rope is fairly beaten up, especially the first 10 feet. I have new steel line that my winch came with. But the roller fairlead sticks so far out it gets hammered and won’t roll. So looking at work I can get some steel plate basically whatever thickness I want, we’ve got scraps from 1/4, 3/8,1/2, and 7/8. I was thinking 3/8 and then cover it with 1/4-3/8 plastic that we got kicking around as a replaceable wear piece. Any thoughts on this ? Am I wasting my time? It’s free for me and I’ve got spare time and all the stuff to do it.

They're normally just steel hawse fairleads for steel cable. The cable will just eat the plastic I believe. Do you have access to hardened stuff? AR-whatever (AR500 would be great) or T1 are common, or anyone there that will weld some hardface on it for you?
You can just buy one too I guess. I think they're cheap. Not sure how common they are with the advent of synthetic rope.
The other option is the roller fairlead I have. It's low profile, doesnt stick out much more than a hawse. I'd have to go through my orders to see who made it.

Do you have a decent pic of the low profile roller setup, might be able to build something similar as well

Yeah, that's the one. I can get a pic of it mounted if you want. It hardly sticks out though.

I’m leaning towards cutting my synthetic line back 10 feet and resplicing it. It’s just the first but that’s really beaten up. I don’t want to spend any money on this if I don’t have to. Just bought property and trying to build a house. And I’d still like to build another rig but this winch may not work for it.
