Well The inevitable happened. I suffered a partial spontaneous disassembly of the front axle u joint yesterday. The axles may have survived though. Hoping it’s an easy fix. Caught it after airing up on the way home. Trip was pretty savage. To many new people and more snow than expected.

Kinda boogered some welds, my tip on the wire feed is done and kept jamming up. Just extra to help keep things attached.

Just do a single tack at the bottom of the cap. Tacking the sides and top creates distortion and because there's so much less metal there to suck out the heat it risks ruining the heat treat of the yoke and cap.

Back from my early days of wheeling my 03 rubicon, it would stretch the ears of the axle shafts and pop caps so I had them fully welded to keep the caps in, that was before chromoly axles were easy to get. It worked really well. The cap fit in pretty snug so I don’t think it stretched , just dusted the one side of the cross from old age. I figured with some tacks it should give me a little more warning when it’s done. Felt lucky it didn’t pop up top in the deep snow. I’ll just do the single tack on the other side. My welding isn’t the best, still learning so I may have overdone it a bit

I wrap a wet rag around the joint. At least it helps keep it from cooking the needle bearings.

My plow truck has them fully welded in. Been running fine since... And it's abused. Badly.

Well finally it happened. Broke some thing up front. I suspect it’s the lokka lunch box locker that gave out. Drove it home and hopefully I can tear into it tomorrow to verify what gave up. Making bad banging ratcheting noises and sometimes the passenger front tire won’t turn. Shakes the steering wheel when it’s banging. When I turned around I thought it could have been the tcase or trans but after limping out I’m sure it’s the front diff

No parts laying in the bottom. Locker just ratchets freely with very little force. Definitely doesn’t have the tension it sounds have

Pins worn down or broken springs? Or did it smear the teeth off?

I’m going to pull the axles today and take the carrier out. There seems to be play on the passenger side of the locker parts having a lot more gap than there should be, they spread apart 1/8 of an inch or more.

Nothing half assed from me when it comes to breaking although it’s been a while for sure. The way it was good then not good I suspected something along this. But thought or hoped it was the locker gear that popped so I could just put my spiders back in and keep wheeling

Other side of the carrier is cracked from both sides as well. Really close to splitting clean in half
