These guys make a crate motor that bolts in like a internal combustion engine and mates to existing drive train with all the controllers on the package. Really cool setup

Ya. This is really cool because of the setup. It’s just a crate motor. V8 sized with dual electric motors. Seems to be as easy as most ls swaps

I looked at electrifying one of my Comanches to just drive around town. The big killer was I couldn't even get a reasonable price on used batteries from other electric cars. The stuff just isn't common enough yet.

That’s been my big hiccup too. Chevy Volt batteries seem to be the common search for them. The samurai one just had lithium batteries meant for a 12v solar setup.

I have to find the thread on it but I believe he had two of those and the motor under the hood.
I follow a channel on YouTube of a local Offgrid family and they had a room full of deep cycle battery’s in their shop that powered the whole farm.
Now there just a few on the the wall for their whole system.

It was a while ago, but I ran the numbers on every battery I could find, and it was just not viable given the shit aerodynamics of the vehicle I liked, the curb weight, and the parasitic loss if I wanted it to be 4wd.
The Volt batteries were the best deal, but I was still paying twice what the guys in the US said they could find them for.

What voltage do you need to run these things? Just to educate me why cant you run a bunch of lead acid batts in series? Just not enough juice?

lead acid batts would work but they wouldn’t last very long (service life) unless you had a lot of them, like dangerous goods placards amounts...plus the charge time would suck and you wouldn’t have as much range. I guess it depends how far you want to go and how fast you want to get there....Electric cars have been a thing since 1832 and the problem always has been batteries just arent good enough yet to compete with internal combustion cars range and convenience. “they” (some sciency type university i can’t remember) are supposedly close to producing a new solid state (sodium?) battery that blows lithium out of the water (smaller, cheaper to produce, less unobtanium materials and more energy density) so maybe the lithiums get cheaper after that...or all the people with this generation of electric cars will be paying an arm and a dick for new batteries when their obsolete stuff needs replacing.

You need almost 100V to really be a reasonable system for a vehicle larger than a scooter. They're just too inefficient below that. And A/C with regenerative braking is really a must.
The controllers, wiring, motors, etc aren't that horrible in price. It really is just the batteries.
