I'm looking at adapting a Ford oil pan to solve some issues with my Mercedes diesel's pan/sump setup, but I don't really know if it might be close enough to be made to work. If anyone knows roughly how wide/long these pans are at the mounting flange I'd like to know.

The option that looks promising is the 352-428 big block FE one like this: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g3537

There's some chance I might find a 5.0 modular one that is priced well enough to look at.

100% serious question, why not get a piece of 1/8" (3 metric units?) and cut out your own flange, then just trim it in with whatever ~0.040" (1 metric?)

obviously aside from the time to cut it out and figure out how to patch it together

This would be faster if it's close to the right size. I need to mill the existing upper pan somewhat flat, plug some holes, weld a flange onto it that would match this pan, then face it all so it will seal.

Another guy did it with a Cummins pan, but it was honestly too big to start with so he sectioned it.

If this isn't close enough I'll keep looking for other options, if none are I will just build it from scratch.

makes sense, interesting that the FE pan would be close enough to be, well, close enough, for the MB

I just looked at my 460 pan. Its more different than the 428 pan than I thought

Does it have a flat flange on it and the sump on one end (not middle, it can be front or back)? That's all I'm really looking for.

Most pans have a dish on the flange for the crank seals, and that would be a PITA to work with.

both ends have cutouts for crank seals and theres a bump on the front that would probably interfere with something. Its yours if you think you can make it work

I assume you've already looked at the older 302 pans? We've got enough "good core" 302s around the yard that no one would ever notice one disappeared...

They're not flat flange, not really what I want to deal with.

I'm not really replacing it.

This is the upper oil pan:
The lower pan goes on that flange. That doesn't matter, it's not where I want it and doesn't do anything for me. The plan is to hack most of that flange off, and then mill down the rest of the upper pan so it's go a fairly flat part on it that I can then weld a new flange to for interfacing with a new lower pan. Then I can drill some holes through the upper pan to allow the oil to drain off the windage passages and into the new lower pan/sump. The current setup is front sump, which is going to result in steering and suspension compromises that I do not wish to make. Plus front sump isn't a good idea for anything but a car anyways.

Finding a pan that has a flat flange, is fairly rectangular, and mostly the right shape will prevent me from at least having to fabricate the lower pan. Bonus if it's something cheap like the Ford ones.

What's the overall length?

I'm not home to measure it.

Maybe 28" though. Give or take. I don't want to go too far back as some of the rear part is structural mounting for the bellhousing.
