So, needed a rear bumper... Because there isn't one, and you couldn't attach a stock one even.

Weld 'er up.

I think the D-ring tabs were from TMR or Ruffstuff, the hitch is a PA special (comes painted even though it's a weld on, f-ing PA rofl), the bolts were just threaded into some nuts welded inside which are for later use (integration with the gas tank skid).

Done for now.

I tossed together a gas tank skid since this thing basically can't be wheeled without one. I screwed up a bit here and didn't take many pictures, so I'm going to try not to do that again.

I reused the brackets from the hitch, made a new crossmember between them, and made a bracket to tie that to the bumper.
Image

In retrospect I should have saved the hitch for if I ever needed one, or sold it, and just made the brackets from scratch since they didn't save me any time or effort.

Sleeves in that crossmember:

Fitting up the side pieces. I put a cutout in it for the exhaust, not sold that was the best solution and may wiggle the exhaust over and plate that area in too....

Finished up

Clearance isn't bad for being a stock tank that's moved back.

And needed a front bumper.

I really debated doing a hidden winch, but at the end of the day I'd rather be able to see the cable spool and get at the winch easily, plus there's a lot of brush around here so the bumper does need to protect the sheetmetal a bit.

Then I actually took the thing wheeling a few different times.

Pictures from one trip:

(I made that receiver hitch gas tank thing in the middle of the night before going out on the trip before that, as apparently the 4.0L doesn't get great fuel economy with heavy 37s)

The few trips revealed some issues.

So the steering and track bar really didn't work as well as I hoped. On bandaid #3 now, and hopefully it's all good.

I gave up on the Wagoneer arm and got a WJ arm, which is just a touch shorter and has a bit more drop.

Image

Image

Unfortunately the master splines are indexed differently, enough that it won't work for me given the amount of steering I have (and would like to retain).

Image

Reaming to 1 ton. Fixturing is bojang. Bojang is my life.

Image

Master splines hand cut out using a hacksaw and file. Yay.

Image

Back together after installing the pitman arm a couple times to check the imprinting on the splines I cut. Track bar moved down a hole so hopefully it won't hit the oil pan when shit gets sporty.

Image

You can see the slight rub mark from the DLE contacting the track bar lightly with the wagoneer arm.

Image

Hopefully it works better this time.

Yes, I smashed an oil pan so hard a counterweight tried to go through it. I hadn't considered just how much my bumpstops would compress, and that the engine compresses the motor mounts when you bottom out on shit.

And that's it. We're caught up.

I'm sure a ton of pictures and info got lost in all of that, but it happens.

Hope so.

Also might do a very basic interior cage so I don't die.

Long term I don't want to mod it more, really just shake the bugs out, as I think it works reasonably well for what I intended, and I just want to wheel.

Might need some more snow friendly tires and beadlocks (or glue) though. :ideas:

I'm not sure what the right solution would be for beadlocks really. I like my Dodge wheels. They are basically perfect as far as the scrub radius goes. Throwing a beadlock ring on them would make that a bit worse, but not bad.

Almost all of the aftermarket wheels would make it horrible. Hence why I used stock wheels to begin with. That said, maybe there's some aftermarket steel wheels that would be okay even if they had a weld on beadlock.

That said I don't think scrub radius matters as much for snow.

Yeah, I want nothing to do with 16.5s.

Tonight's fun... why are all these wires spliced, cut off, and taped? :homer:
